Peg A Name or Two!

I recently came across this fantastic idea shared online by Sally & decided that it would be a very worthwhile activity to create for the children at East Sale Kindergarten in our 4 Year Old Program.

We have so many children who can either write their name confidently by themselves AND OTHERS who are starting to show an interest in what their name looks AND the individual letters that make up their name.

For those children who can't yet write their name, we have started using our name pockets which house printed names for the children to label their own artwork. This is a wonderful way for children to learn to take responsibility for their own belongings / creations AS WELL AS visually learning how their name looks.

The new activity that the children were introduced today consisted of individual laminated name cards & a selection of wooden pegs, upon which alphabet letters had been added with a permanent pen. So simple don't you think?

"I can peg my name"

The children simply selected their name - or the name of a friend for that matter - and then searched for the matching letters that spelled out the name, pegging them onto the laminated name card under each individual letter.

Lots of names were pegged!

Depending on the individual group of children, I can see that this activity can be extended for those children who are keen to 'learn' more words . . . just make up new name cards & off they go! For that matter - they could even make up their own cards themselves!

Thanks for sharing this fantastic idea Sally!
