Roly Poly Caterpillar!

It's amazing how creative children can be with a wonderful pile of playdough placed in front of them! We are very fortunate at East Sale Kindergarten to have someone who makes the most amazing soft & smooth playdough . . . now who could that be I wonder? Mrs. Murray of course!

This week in the 4 Year Old Program, we've had yellow playdough & just for fun we added some mauve 'gems', cutters & mini cupcake holders to the table. It's always interesting to start off with a few basic supplies & see what the children do with them & whether we can scaffold their learning by offering additional supplies. Today wasn't one of those days where we offered anything else . . . just look at what was made in the centre of the table today!

Please say hello to 'Roly Poly Caterpillar' - just how did 'Roly Poly Caterpillar' get his name? Well . . . perhaps you can guess? All the segments of his body consist of little round balls that all six (6) of the children at the table worked together to create - yes! It was a wonderful group project that was initiated by one child & that then grew to involve all the children at the table (& five (5) standing around watching). There was lots of language going on between all the children with discussions about how long he was, what he liked to eat & which direction his body should go the main focus!

It was wonderful to see two (2) particularly quiet children really coming out of their shell & actively contributing / leading this project - not only by rolling balls themselves BUT also in directing other children where they should place their balls & how to actually roll the playdough in their hands to form a little ball! It was a wonderful sight to see these children displaying such confidence with their peers!

Don't you just love his little hat & ears?
